The Library has made a new tutorial for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology students.  
The step-by-step tutorial is designed to help students learn to reference correctly according to the Cell referencing style.

The tutorial covers:

Developing your online presence

The Library is working with the Careers Service to deliver a new workshop for postgraduate researchers as part of the Doctoral Development Programme.

It is essential for today’s researchers to understand how to make an impact and be able to measure the impact of others. This session will introduce you to readily-available online tools enabling you to maximize your impact on the research community, create an online personal profile which will be visible to other researchers and to possible employers, and assess the impact of others.

The session helps research students to develop and manage their online presence enabling them to exploit social media, build up a scholarly community, behave professionally online, engage with people outside academia (including employers), disseminate research widely and increase personal impact.

Loan Periods: Christmas Vacation 2013

If you're going away over the vacation, remember to check your myLibrary Account in StarPlus to make sure that your items have been renewed (don’t forget you can also renew the items yourself) and return any that need to be brought back sooner.
If an item is not requested we will continue to automatically renew it beyond 20th January but any that are requested during vacation will need to be returned on that date.

Managing references in Google Scholar

Google Scholar has just brought out a new feature that allows you to save and organise the references you find when searching.

Once you're logged into your Google account simply activate 'My Library' from Google Scholar and then whenever you want to send a reference to your Library just click 'save' underneath each search result.

From 'My Library' you can create different labels to organise your references into groups, making them easy to find, and you can also export your references to endnote or other more advanced reference management software.

Using Doctoral theses in your research - a guide to EThOS

EThOS is the national database for PhD theses, managed by the British Library. It’s a fantastic resource for researchers, with over 100,000 UK theses freely available to download and use for your own research, and another 200,000 available to search and scan on demand. 

EThOS are running a free webinar on Tuesday Dec 10, 2013 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM GMT for anyone interested in learning more about the service.

Find out how to search for and download theses, and what to do if a thesis isn’t available. If you’re a PhD student, find out what will happen to your thesis once it’s completed. The webinar will also explain how EThOS works with UK universities to support the whole research cycle, making the theses more visible and available for new researchers to use and build on.

Nexis UK – news and business information database

The University Library is now subscribing to Nexis, a news and business information database that includes full-text UK national and regional newspapers. It also provides business information such as company profiles and industry reports from a variety of sources. Therefore, Nexis will be relevant to all students requiring news and business information.  The database may also be useful for language students as it includes a range of international newspapers, newswires and foreign language news sources. 

Nexis has a range of search screens for the different types of information sources it indexes e.g. NewsCompany ProfilesIndustry News etc. Navigate between these search screens by clicking on the tabs at the top of the page. The Power Searchscreen can be used to create a customised list of information sources, which can then be searched.  On the Power Search screen click on More sources under theSources drop-down box to browse or search for information sources (There is aBrowse Sources tab and a Find Sources tab). Alternatively, you can click on theSources tab at the top of the page. From here you can choose to browse information sources from a particular country or by language. Once you have selected a country, topic and language from the drop-down menus, you can browse a list of sources relevant to the criteria that you selected. You can find out more information about a source by clicking on the i icon. 

Click on the Help link at the top of the page to access a range of video tutorials that will teach you how to use the key features of Nexis including the News search page and Power Search. There are 10 minute in-depth tutorials and shorter 90 second tutorials.

The Writing Advisory Service (from the English Language Teaching Centre) offers support and advice for home and international students on writing essays, reports and theses.

You can discuss any of the following areas of difficulty which you might be having with your writing:
  • logical organisation and linking of ideas
  • paragraph structure
  • sentence length and structure
  • grammar
  • punctuation and spelling
  • referencing both within the text and in a bibliography
  • vocabulary (but not too subject-specific)

bioRxiv (pronounced "bio-archive") is a free online archive of unpublished preprints in the life sciences. 

It is operated by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, a not-for-profit research and educational institution. By posting preprints on bioRxiv, authors are able to make their findings immediately available to the scientific community and receive feedback on draft manuscripts before they are submitted to journals.  This makes it a great free resource for life-science students, and an opportunity for researchers to raise their profile.

Public Engagement with Research Masterclass 9: Working with the Media and Social Media

If you are a member of staff or a post graduate student at the University of Sheffield and want to learn more about working with the media and using social media for public engagement, please come along to this Public Engagement masterclass, hosted by Professor Vanessa Toulmin and colleagues from the Media and Digital Engagement Teams.

The masterclass will cover:

1. What to think about when working with the media in public engagement
2. What to think about when using social media in your public engagement activity
3. Case studies of media engagement

The event will take place in the John Carr Design Suite (located in building 177 on the University map) on Wednesday between 2 and 4pm. Lunch and networking will be available between 1.15 and 2pm.

Web of Knowledge Data Citation Index

We now have access to the Data Citation Index via Web of Knowledge.
The Data Citation Index allows users to discover and explore the data related to research articles, books and conference proceedings.  The index includes data studies, and data sets from a wide range of international data repositories and connects them with the scientific literature. 
  • Discover international repositories and their deposited data studies and data sets
  • Navigate between related records within a repository
  • Link to the repository record to access the deposited data
  • See how data connects to scientific literature published in journals, books and conference proceedings
     Use the 'select a database' tab in Web of Knowledge to access and search the Data Citation Index

British Library Open Days for PhD students

The British Library are running open days for new PhD students to discover the unique research materials available. Open days are an opportunity for research students to explore the material available and how to access it. It is also a chance to speak to expert staff and other researchers.

Revised standards for Information Security Management available on BSOL

Two revised standards for information security management, security technologies, have recently been published. You can view the full text standards using British Standards Online (BSOL).

Information technology - security techniques:

BS ISO/IEC - 27002:2013 - Code of practice for information security controls

How to access BSOL:
Log into MUSE and click My services
Click StarPlus, Library catalogue
Click Sign In as "University Member"
Search for British Standards Online using the University Collections Search
Locate BSOL in your results and click "View Online" and "Open source in a new window"
Use the quick link on the right side of the screen to access BSOL

Once you are in BSOL you can search for standards using the standard number or key words. Click on the standard number to view more information about it.

An Afternoon of Open Access

In celebration of International Open Access Week, the Open Access Team in the Library will be holding an event on the 23rd October from 1-5pm. Our invited speakers will discuss a range of topics including open data, open access at a local and international level, the role of repositories, and new publishing technologies. Have a chat with us over coffee as well!

Sage Research Methods

Sage Research Methods is an online search tool for finding information about research methodologies, and is relevant to a range of disciplines including psychology and the health sciences.  It may be particularly helpful if you are in the process of designing, conducting or writing up a research project.  For example, use it to answer questions about your chosen research method. 
Use the Quick Search box (located in the top left of the page) to locate relevant information or use the Advanced Search option to construct precise search queries.  Search results will include: books, book chapters, dictionary and Encyclopaedia entries, videos and journal articles.   You can link to the full-text from the search results.  
There are also options for browsing the database as well as a Methods Map (located under the Methodologies drop-down menu), which is a visual search tool.  The Methods Map may be useful if you are not sure which research method to use.
Sage Research Methods is available now via StarPlus. Alternatively, follow this link  and click Connect to Sage Research Methods - you will be prompted to log into MUSE.

Welcome back! Library changes for returning students

There have been a few changes to Library services over the summer. Below are some of the changes but please ask for help if you are not sure. You can ask for more information at any library information desk, take a look at the library guide to lending services or contact the library helpdesk -

Library PIN – the University & Library PIN are now combined into a single PIN. You will need your PIN to borrow books. If you forget it, go to, login with your University username & password and choose option 6 to have your PIN e-mailed to you.

As long as no-one has requested your books we will automatically renew them for you. We will send you an e-mail to let you know if any of your books cannot be renewed due to requests on them, and we will also send you a weekly borrowing statement to remind you which books you have out on loan and highlight any that have been requested.

Fines are now only charged for the late return of requested items but accumulate at the rate of £2 per day. Remember to check your library account and borrowing statements regularly!

Each week you will receive a borrowing statement by e-mail. This will list what you have out on loan. If one of your books needs to be returned as someone else has requested it, we'll let you know, so check this e-mail carefully.

Don't forget to sign in to StarPlus by clicking University Members. Signing in ensures that you can access all the content that you are entitled, including subscribed journals and databases, and ensures that you can use features such as myLibrary Account and the e-shelf. Automatic Renewals

We've made some changes to the library system to make it easier for you to keep your account up to date.

From now on, we will automatically renew your loans as long as no-one has requested them. 
If one of your loans has been requested and we are unable to renew it, we will send you an email to let you know that you need to return it.  
We will also send you a weekly borrowing statement to remind you which books you have out on loan and highlight any that have been requested.
Make sure you check your weekly borrowing statement and library account regularly to avoid fines.

Changing your Ucard PIN

You need your Ucard PIN in order to issue and renew books.  You also need it to access some swipe-access doors at the University.

If you wish to change your Ucard PIN to something more memorable, you can now do so by logging into your Computer User Management account.

Mintel - new MBD Industrial Reports

Over the past few months a number of new MBD industrial reports have been made available through Mintel. Mintel provides market intelligence data and analysis and has a specific area dedicated to industrial reports.

To access the reports search for Mintel using the StarPlus University Collections search box. Follow the link to "View online" and click "Open source in a new window". From the Mintel My Reports home page scroll down to find the section MBD Industrial Reports.

Recent additions include:

  • Recruitment Consultants - UK - July 2013
  • Tubes and Pipes - UK - June 2013
  • Potable water - UK - May 2013

RSC Chemical Database Service

The Royal Society of Chemistry have recently produced a series of video tutorials on the
ACD / I-Lab service.

ACD / I-Lab provides predictions based on chemical structures, including physicochemical properties, NMR spectra and chemical shifts, and ADME toxicities.  Structures can be input in a variety of forms - draw a structure using the I-Lab interface, or look up a compound using the built in dictionary.

You can view the tutorials via the RSC YouTube channel.

New Resource - Box of Broadcasts (BoB)

Box of Broadcasts (BoB) is an off-air recording and media archive service. It allows you to record TV and radio programmes scheduled to be broadcast over the next seven days as well as retrieving programmes from the last seven days from a selected list of recorded channels. In addition, you can watch programmes from the archive, create clips, and compile your favourite shows into playlists.


Access is available through the above link or from A-Z database list, by connecting to the BoB website. You will be prompted to log in to MUSE as necessary.

Public Engagement Masterclass

The Public Engagement with Research team are running a series of ten free sessions aimed at University of Sheffield staff and postgraduates.
The fifth session is on Wednesday 26 June, 2–4pm in the John Carr Design Suite.  This session will cover:
  • how to cost a public engagement event
  • keeping within your budget
  • costs incurred from external venues
  • using the University Research Management System (URMS)
  • the Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF).
Speakers for this masterclass are Professor Vanessa Toulmin and colleagues from Research and Innovation Services.
The events are quite informal and there is time set aside for networking.

Changes to Library PIN

From Thursday 20 June, the Library will be upgrading its systems. As a consequence of this, registered staff and students will need to use a new PIN at the self-service machines when issuing and renewing items.

An e-mail was sent from the Library HelpDesk with your new PIN on Thursday 20 June, but if you forget you PIN, please:
Your Ucard number and PIN will then be sent to you by email.

Changes to Library Systems

We've nearly finished updating our library systems, but there are a few more changes coming up this week.
Library Systems Transition Period

From Friday 21 June...
Some changes relating to the Library PIN (for University members) and to the password required to log into StarPlus (for NHS staff and external members) will be made. You will be informed of any changes to your details by email before they are implemented.
The number of items that you may borrow at any time may change. The new limits are:
  • 35 for University staff and research students and NHS staff
  • 25 for all taught course students
  • 5 for external customers
The Find it @Sheffield A-Z list of electronic journals will be integrated within StarPlus and the Library web pages will direct to StarPlus as a result of this change. External databases may still direct you to the Find it A-Z list for a short period but a message will be available on that page to redirect you.

Within StarPlus, the 'View Online' tab providing access to journal articles and other electronic information will be called 'View It'. The 'Locations' and ‘Request’ tabs providing information about print material will be combined and renamed ‘Get It'.

Self Issue, Return and Renewal Services

We are mid way through upgrading our library systems.  As a result of this, the self service issue and return machines will be temporarily unavailable this week.  

If you wish to borrow or return an item; please take it to any of the Library desks and ask a member of staff.  There will be no issue service outside of staffed hours but we will extend the staffed hours at the Information commons to 08:00-21:00 and at the Health Sciences Library at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital 09:00-21:00.  During self service hours at the Information Commons please take any items for return to the concierges.

If you want to renew items please take them to a Library desk or email us at and we will renew your items as soon as the new system is available.

Want to view recent trade publications? Need company profiles? Try Business Source Premier

Business Source Premier allows you to search for full text articles across a number of business publications including journals, trade publications and magazines. Results also include market research reports, industry reports and company profiles. All disciplines of business are covered including marketing, finance and economics. 

How to connect:

Go to StarPlus, the Library catalogue and sign in using the link in the top right corner
Search for "Business Source Premier" using the University Collections tab 
Locate the database "Business Source Premier" within your results
Click "View Online"

Getting started:

Use the basic search box to enter key words e.g. civil engineering services
Use the options on the left side of the page to refine your search e.g. select Trade Publications beneath Source Types
Click on an article title to view a detailed abstract
Use the PDF links to view the full text document

If you are interested in particular company profiles use the "Company Profiles" quick link at the top of each page. You can use the search box or A-Z menu.

Upgrades to Library Systems in June

The Library will be upgrading many of its back-office systems between 14th and 21st June.  Whilst we aim to keep disruption to a minimum during this transition period, certain Library services will be affected.  We aim to have services in operation by Friday 21 June.
We'll be posting regular updates on the library system transition webpages, on this blog, and via our Twitter feed
From Friday 14th June, certain features of StarPlus will be temporarily unavailable:
  • Online Renewals:  If you wish to renew books during the transition period, please email us at, call the Library Helpdesk 0114 222-7200, or visit an information desk at any library site.  
  • Requests: It will not be possible to place requests via StarPlus but if you wish to request a book please go to any of the Library desks and fill in a reservation card. We will make your request as soon as the new systems are in place.
  • myResource lists service will continue to be available, however links to StarPlus may be affected. 

The processing of interlibrary requests will be delayed during the transition period, but we will process all requests as soon as possible. If you have any interlibrary loan items on loan to you and you are likely to be away from The University please return these before you leave.

Group Study Rooms at the Library

The bookable group study rooms at the Information Commons are very popular, so we thought we'd remind you of the other facilities available at other library sites.

There are several group study rooms available at Western Bank Library -  these are located on level four and vary in size, seating between 3 and 10 people.

There is also a group study room at the Health Science Library at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

All of these are bookable through the myRooms&Resources link in MUSE.

If a room is booked, but no one has turned up, other groups are free to use the room (for the duration of the original booking) - if you're unsure, please ask a member of staff.  See our further guidance on using group study rooms.

As we're nearing the end of semester, we just want to wish you all good luck with your exams and final year projects - remember there is loads of support available from the library if you need any help finding books and journals, advice on plagiarism and referencing, and much more.  

You can contact the Library Helpdesk, find the librarian for your subject, drop into the Skills Suite in the Information Commons, or have a look at our online tutorials.

Just a reminder to final year students that all library material needs to be returned, and any outstanding fines paid, by the end of service hours on Saturday 8 June.

Finding Materials for your Research Workshop

In this session we will look at the main sources of information, including StarPlus, Scopus, Web of Science and IEEE Xplore, demonstrating speedy and thorough searching techniques. We will also look at some subject-specific databases, and advise you on getting material from other libraries.

Changes to eBook Access

There have been some slight changes to the method of accessing eBooks via the Dawsonera platform.

When you access a Dawsonera eBook via the library catalogue StarPlus, you will see two icons:

Dawsonera read online
Use this this option to navigate through the ebook using the hyperlinked table of contents or by entering a page number.

Dawsonera download

Use this option to download the ebook onto the local drive of your computer, a CD or memory stick for a 24 hour period.

New AIP Referencing Tutorial

We've recently created a new tutorial on using the American Institute of Physics (AIP) referencing style.

The tutorial is part of the Library Information Skills Resource, which features loads of other useful advice, such as how to search databases, evaluate information and avoid plagiarism.

The Information Skills Resource has tutorials on many other referencing styles - just select your department from the drop down list under the 'Referencing' section.

The first sessions, ‘Searching for Researching: finding quality resources for your undergraduate research project’ are aimed at any undergraduate student who is carrying out their first research project. These will be held on the following dates:
